Plan Commission

In 1926, the City Council adopted an ordinance creating the Plan Commission. At that time, the Commission's primary role was to review subdivisions and requests for changes in zoning. Those two reviews remain today as a very important part the Commissions role, but the Plan Commission's role and responsibilities have expanded substantially since 1926.

The Plan Commission is responsible for regularly reviewing and updating the City's Comprehensive Plan. The most recent up-date of our Plan was begun in 1996, with the City Council adopting the new Plan in March of 1998. The Plan Commission also reviews and updates the Zoning Code and Zoning Map when needed.

The Plan Commission reviews all subdivision requests. As the City approaches full build out and the amount of vacant land is reduced, subdivisions become increasingly more difficult due to the impact they have on the more established areas of town. Although the number of subdivisions that occur today are less than in previous decades, they often require more time and careful consideration.

Finally, the Plan Commission also has the responsibility of considering all matters referred to them by the City Council, such as the Central Business District Study, the Route 60 Sub Area Study, and recommendations regarding the annexation of remaining unincorporated parcels on our western border.

Applications to the Plan Commission are available at the Community Development Department or by calling 234-2600 for more information.

The Commission meets second Wednesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall, 220 E. Deerpath.  Regular Plan Commission meetings are broadcast live and rebroadcast Fridays at 6:30 p.m. and Saturdays at 8:00 a.m. on City 17.  A DVD copy of the meeting is available in the Reference Section at Lake Forest Library.
