Waukegan Road Streetscape Enhancement Project - Last Phase
The last phase of Waukegan Road Streetscape
Enhancement project entailing improvements along
Settler’s Square and Gloucester Crossing was scheduled
to be completed in fall of 2011. City was allotted
grants worth $2,000,000 for the pedestrian underpass
tunnel project at the west side Telegraph Road train
station, which is in close proximity to the Settler’s
Square streetscape improvement project. With this news,
City rejected the bids for the last phase of Waukegan
Road Streetscape Enhancement project and will construct
this improvement project in two stages.
The Stage 1 of the Waukegan Road Streetscape
Enhancement Project consists of improvements along
Gloucester Crossing including granite crosswalks, and
replacement of curb, sidewalk and roadway whereas in
Settler’s Square the work will involve brick stamping
work on the center island and replacement of curb,
sidewalk and roadway. In order to take advantage of
economies of scale quantities, the Stage 1 project will
be bid spring 2012 with the City’s Annual Resurfacing
Program. The tentative construction period for Stage 1
would be summer 2012.
The Stage 2 of the Waukegan Road Streetscape
Enhancement Project will be coordinated with the
construction of the pedestrian underpass project and
will entail brick stamping work at the west end of
Settler’s Square, near the steps to the Train Station
platform and will also include granite crosswalks in
Settler’s Square. The Stage 2 tentative construction
period would be summer 2012.
South Beach Access Road Reconstruction Project
At
the May 2 Committee
of the Whole meeting, the
City Council endorsed the concept of a Revised
Option 2 plan for the South Beach Access
Reconstruction project.
The Revised Option 2
was developed over time and after many meetings based on
resident concerns and the brainstorming sessions of the
Technical Committee (comprised of professionals with
expertise in geotechnical engineering and ravine/bluff
restoration.
Construction is scheduled to begin in early September,
with the majority of the work completed by early
December, and we will do our best to make information
and updates available to residents as often as possible).

Did you know that about 20% of the land in the U.S. is affected by
excess water that can damage homes and property? The good news is
that there are signs a homeowner can look for, situations to avoid and
solutions that reduce drainage problem. The City has developed a
brochure to assist residents in understanding their drainage problems
and to provide possible solutions to reduce those problems. A copy
of the brochure can be downloaded by clicking on the link above, or call

In most cases, the private property owner is responsible for
maintaining the portion of the drainage system located on their property
and solving localized problems. There are many ways to improve drainage.
Some are simple and inexpensive, while others are more
complex and costly. If you plan to contract out the work, be sure
to get more than one estimate and carefully evaluate different
alternatives. Prior to beginning any work, remember to call:
