Refuse Collection Schedules & Guidelines

Collection Frequency -- Refuse is collected twice weekly, on either a Monday and Thursday or a Tuesday and Friday schedule depending upon the area in which you reside. Please call 847-615-4264 to inquire as to your collection days.

Holiday Schedule -- The Sanitation Section only observes New Year’s Day, Easter, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.  City offices may be closed for additional holidays, but the Sanitation Section only observes the holidays listed above.  For a complete list of the holidays and the accompanying collection schedules, click here.

Refuse Containers -- All refuse must be bagged and deposited into covered, lightweight containers not to exceed 32-gallon capacity. Each resident is allowed a maximum of four such containers to be collected on a single refuse collection day.

Collection Locations -- Refuse containers are required to be out by 7:00 a.m. on the day of your collection. Refuse containers are to be placed in front of the garage. Sanitation personnel are not permitted to enter homes, garages, porches or any enclosed structure to empty containers.

Household Hazardous Waste -- For disposal of household hazardous waste (paint, chemicals, oil, solvents, pesticides, etc.) please call 847-615-4264.

SWALCO Events -- In addition to Mobile Household Chemical Waste Events held around Lake County from spring through fall, residents can schedule an appointment to dispose of their household chemical waste (HCW) at SWALCO’s permanent facility located in Gurnee at 1311 N. Estes St. Drop-off events are offered year-round, multiple times per month, including the second Saturday of each month. Appointments are required. Make your appointment online at www.swalco.org (under the HCW page) or call 847-336-9340.

Christmas Trees -- Christmas trees are collected on regular scheduled household recycling days during the month of January. Trees must be placed curbside and free of all ornamentation.

Special Collections
A special curbside refuse pickup may be scheduled to handle large, bulky items such as furniture and other assorted items. Appliances are considered an Appliance Pickup, not a Special Collection.  There is a minimum fee of $40.00 for this service, which includes the first two cubic yards. Each additional two cubic yards is $40.00. Collections must be scheduled at least one business day in advance of the normal refuse collection day. Special collection refuse material must be placed curbside and out by 7:00 a.m. on the scheduled collection day.  Please call 847-615-4264 to arrange for a special collection.

Excess household items can also be dropped off at the City's Recycling and Compost Center, which is available for Lake Forest residents only, located at 1381 Kennedy Road (Rt. 60 west of Waukegan Road on the south side of the street).

Move-In Collections
New residents or residents moving within the community are allowed up to three curbside pickups for boxes and packing material. Collections must be scheduled at least one business day in advance of the normal refuse collection day. Boxes and additional packing material must be placed curbside and out by 7:00 a.m. on the scheduled collection day.  Please call 847-615-4264 to arrange for a special collection.

Move-Out Collections
One free move-out curbside pickup of reasonable volume is provided for a resident moving out or within the community. Collections must be scheduled at least one business day in advance of the normal refuse collection day. Move-out items must be placed curbside and out by 7:00 a.m. on the scheduled collection day. Please call 847-615-4264 to arrange for a special collection.

Appliance Collections
A curbside appliance collection may be scheduled to handle large appliances that are not included in special collections. The Illinois Clean Air Act requires special handling of household appliances containing CFC's such as air conditioners, dehumidifiers, refrigerators, and freezers. There is a $90.00 fee for the first appliance, and a $65.00 fee for each additional appliance.

Household appliances that do not contain CFC's, such as washers, dryers, dishwashers, humidifiers, stoves, water heaters, and water softeners will be collected for a fee of $65.00 per appliance.

Collections must be scheduled at least one business day in advance of the desired collection day (Monday - Friday). Appliances must be placed curbside and out by 7:00 a.m. on the scheduled collection day.  Please call 847-615-4264 to arrange for a special collection.
