The City of Lake Forest is proud of its parklands, including one community park, five neighborhood parks, a beach and boat launching area, an 18-hole golf course, a nature preserve and year-round recreational programming for all ages. Follow the links above for information on specific park amenities.

Lake Forest residents interested in reserving park facilities for a family outing must observe the Park Reservation Regulations noted in the downloadable form listed below. To reserve park facilities, an Application for Permitting Activity, Alcohol and Music at Parks Form must be completed and approved. To have alcoholic beverages in a City park, an Application for Liquor License must also be completed and approved. For more information regarding a liquor license, please contact City Clerk Beth Marquez at 847-810-3674 or via email.

Park facilities can be reserved at Deerpath Community, Everett Park, Northcroft Park, South Park, Waveland Park, Townline Community Park and West Park.

What's New in Our City Parks

Forest Park Master Plan Project
The Parks and Recreation Department and Lake Forest Garden Club (LFGC) have begun a collaborative project to develop a Master Plan for Forest Park. The Lake Forest Garden Club, at the request of the City, is funding the creation of the Master Plan document and is working closely with City staff and the community to develop a plan that will protect, preserve and enhance this wonderful lakefront community treasure.

Stephen Stimson Associates from Falmouth, Massachusetts has been selected as the Master Plan Landscape Architect. Mr. Stimson will lead the next critical step by developing the concept plan of possible improvements at the park. Residents can view the concept plans and provide feedback at a variety of upcoming public meetings. The concept plans will be on display at the Recreation Center (400 East Hastings Road) and other key City facilities after November 10, 2009. In addition, once the plans have been shared with the community, a community comment form will be made available on this website. Public participation is key to the success of the project and is greatly valued.

Updates will be posted on this site and in the City’s “Dialogue!” community newsletter over the course of the next year. If you have any questions, you may contact Mary Van Arsdale, Director of Parks and Recreation, at vanarsdm@cityoflakeforest.com or 847-810-3918.

ICE SKATING FUN

Residents have enjoyed ice skating at various park sites for many years. Traditionally the ice rinks are set up by December 1, and the City has always had natural ice (made without the aid of cooling coils). Natural ice takes longer to make as it is built up of layers of ice over time. This process is hampered by snow, however, as when it covers the ice before it has had time to freeze hard, it insulates the ice and slows the freezing process.

Keeping the snow off the ice can be difficult for the Parks Section crews. Unless the ice is frozen solid, the surface can be damaged when crews remove the snow, which makes for a rough skating surface. Last year the snow fall impacted the skating as the first weeks of the season were too warm to establish the ice. Back-to-back snow storms slowed down the natural ice process, and the City received numerous calls asking when the rinks would be available. As the City’s first responsibility is to clear roadways and parking lots, the ice ponds could not receive immediate attention. City crews do, however, make every effort possible to have the rinks open as soon as possible each year.

In previous years, ice rinks were offered at Everett and West Parks. As the rink at Everett Park was used so infrequently, the City will no longer offer skating at that site. The ice rink at West Park will remain open during this winter as weather permits. If you have any questions, please contact Dan Reeves at 847.615.4207.
