Annoyance Calls
Annoying telephone calls can be placed into three categories:
obscene, nuisance, and threatening. Both the obscene and nuisance
calls can usually be stopped by simply hanging up on the caller. The
person making an obscene or nuisance telephone call is seeking to
infuriate or terrify you. If you immediately terminate the call, his
purpose in making the call will not be met. These callers usually
pick their victims at random and do not know the person they have
selected. They sometimes will loo k for a woman's first name in the
telephone listing. If calls such as these continue, notify the
police department for information and assistance. The Police
Department suggests that single women use only their initials in the
telephone book listings.
The third category of the telephone calls, the threatening call,
should be reported immediately to the Police Department. Calls of
this type are threats of physical violence and pending or present
abduction of a family member. It is important that the person
receiving a threatening phone call obtain as much information as
possible and relay it to the Police Department.
