Canine and Feline Tips
Pet Identification
The Lake Forest Police Department
can help
you identify your pet dog or cat should they become lost and not
have their identification tags on. The department has an AVID
identification chip reader to help return your pet to you. Most area shelters and veterinarians also have these readers. The area veterinarians all use AVID when "chipping" pets.
This service involves injecting a small "chip" into the
neck/shoulder area of a dog or cat. The process is safe
and painless and costs about $50.00. This "chip" has a
unique number that is registered to you and your pet. When the reader is passed over the chip, the number is
displayed and the Community Service Officer calls the registering agency for the owner information. We
encourage you to "chip" your pet so they can be quickly reunited
with you should they become lost. If you have any questions,
please contact
Deputy Chief Glenn Burmeister at (847) 810-3804.
Tips
As residents of Lake Forest and good neighbors to
others, we all must be responsible when it comes to taking care of our pets. Not only must
our pets be licensed and inoculated, we must also be aware of City ordinances pertaining
to "Man and Woman's Best Friend."
-
All dogs/cats must be licensed every year with a City license
tag.
-
Dogs more than four months old must obtain a license.
-
To purchase a City license tag, you must provide proof of
rabies inoculation in the form of a certificate signed by a licensed veterinarian.
-
The City license tag must be securely fastened to a collar
worn at all ties by the dog or cat when it is off your premise. This form of
identification would assist the Police Department in locating the owner and returning your
pet back to its home.
-
Dogs are not permitted to run at large anywhere within the
City which includes parks, beach, and school grounds. When not on your property, "your
dog must be on a leash (no longer than 16 feet) secured on its collar or harness and held
or physically controlled by the owner or person with the dog."
-
When walking your dog, you must carry with you a device to
remove excrement left by your dog and deposit this excrement in a receptacle located on
your property.
-
If your dog is continually barking outside on your property,
take the time to bring your pet inside your residence. This is only fair for your neighbors
to not be disturbed.
-
PLEASE, The City streets, parks, parkways, sidewalks are for
all of us!
Don't make it an unpleasant experience for others
by allowing your dog or cat run at large, bark continuously, or leave excrement on public
property.
LET'S WORK TOGETHER!
Please contact a Community Service
Officer at 847-234-2601 if you have questions.
