What the Proposal Is:
A stop on the Hiawatha Service line would be added at 911 Telegraph Road in Lake Forest, IL. The Hiawatha Service connects Chicago to Milwaukee.
There is significant existing infrastructure at this location, as Metra already has an existing station, which would enable Amtrak service at this stop. The Telegraph Road Station in west Lake Forest is a prime Lake County location, close to Conway Office Park and multiple major corporate headquarters, universities and hospitals as well as Great Lakes Naval Station.
The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDot), Metra, Canadian Pacific Railroad and Amtrak all signed a Memorandum of Understanding in 2010 in support of this stop.
How It Will Be Beneficial:
This stop will allow commuters to and from Lake County and Milwaukee an alternative to driving on congested roads.
It will also help Lake County businesses attract workers and provide job seekers in Wisconsin with a convenient means of commuting to the burgeoning job market in Lake County, which includes medical centers, major companies and research institutions. Without this option, many would forego the long driving commute.
It will also improve the environment by reducing vehicle emissions as drivers switch to taking the train to get to work.
It will also provide Lake County residents access to competetive flight options by allowing greater ease of access to General Mitchell International Airport in Milwaukee.
It will also help with State-supported route costs by adding a much sought-after stop at a desirable spot along the Hiawatha Service train line, which is projected to be profitable in coming years.
