Senior Advocate
With the funding from the Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Senior Citizens Foundation, Shields Township and the YWCA of Lake Forest, Dickinson Hall has a full-time Senior Advocate. Janet Fryer, LCPC, is an employee of Family Services of Lake County, and her office is located at Dickinson Hall. She offers information, referral and assistance to older adults and their families throughout the community.
Assistance is offered over the phone, in-person at Dickinson Hall or at community member’s homes, depending on the need. This is a free and confidential service.

Faith in ActionIn addition to our Senior Advocate we have a close partnership with Faith in Action. Faith in Action is a non-profit organization which recruits, trains and supervises caring volunteers who provide transportation, grocery shopping, social support, and caregiver respite. These volunteers often form a quality relationship with those they assist. Their partnership with Dickinson Hall increases the depth of services offered to community members in need. TRANSPORTATION

Dickinson Hall’s Transportation Program has a car and a bus available for the transportation needs of eligible residents. Our friendly and professional drivers are available weekdays from 9:00 am - 3:30 pm for local area appointments, errands, and visits to Dickinson Hall. Scheduling is on a first-come, first-served basis. Rides are $3 each way, with a reduced fare of $2 each way for those who qualify for the Benefits Access Program. Tipping is not permitted. Reservations can be made by calling 847-234-2209.

PACE has expanded its Dial-A-Ride program, which serves older (60+) and disabled individuals living in Lake Bluff, Knollwood and all of Lake Forest. Destinations include all parts of Shields Township and Lake Forest, plus other selected locations. The bus service operates Monday - Friday,
6:00 am - 6:00 pm, and costs $3 one way. Call Shields Township Offices at 847-234-0802 for more information.
(Note: Registration must be completed one week prior to use of the program.)

Several local taxi companies offer a $3 off ride coupon for seniors (65+) for transportation within the Lake Forest High School District 115 only. You may request 16 coupons in a

Resource guide

Family Service of Lake County:   Provides counseling for older adults and family caregivers. Through the Caregiver Resource Center, provides some funds to provide respite or make caregiving easier or safer for family caregivers, and referrals for legal services.

Southeast Lake County Faith in Action Volunteers:  Trained, supervised volunteers provide transportation, run errands, and provide respite for family caregivers, who may not have access to other resources.

211-Information and Helpline covering all of Lake County:  211 is Lake County’s free one-stop shop for help. They are available to help with many different needs. They are always open, confidential and free. Speak to a live person. You can call them by dialing 211, text your zip code to 898211 or visit their website by clicking the link above.

Social Security Administration: The Social Security Administration signs people up for Medicare, which can be done over the website in some cases.  The site also offers information about social security benefits and office locations.

Medicare: Information about Medicare benefits, an internet tool to select drug plans, access to Medicare claims information.

Voter Services for Lake County (Clerk’s office):   Learn voting requirements, where you can vote, voting by mail, and related information.   

Driver, ID and Vehicle Services (Secretary of State):  Renew driver’s licenses and car registrations, information on locations, hours and requirements for motorists and residents of Illinois. 

Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Senior Citizens Foundation:  Provides financial support to Dickinson Hall and its members, funds the Senior Advocate position and serves the needs of older adults in the community.

Illinois Department on Aging:  Information about organizations and programs serving older adults in Illinois.  Links and contact information to agencies managing various programs. 

Senior Help Line:  1-800-252-8966 Information about Medicare, Benefit Access, and information and referral to other resources for older adults.

Reporting Abuse or Neglect of an Older or Disabled Adult:  Call 1-866-800-1409, the statewide, 24-hour Adult Protective Services Hotline. Abuse takes many forms: physical, emotional, financial and neglect.  The abuser may be a family member, acquaintance or paid worker.  Cases in which older adults are unable to care for themselves can also be reported as self-neglect. All reports are confidential.
