Volunteering provides opportunities to enrich lives: giving back to the community, learning about new things and establishing new relationships.
The character of Lake Forest established and fostered daily since its founding in 1861 is based on the creative spirit of its residents and a philanthropic philosophy. Look around at Lake Forest's magnificent trees, ravines, ponds, prairies and savannas, and premier location at the top of the bluff of Lake Michigan. Volunteers are still, to this day, the lifeblood of Lake Forest, working hard in support of the City's natural beauty, local institutions, cultural arts, promoting civic pride and standards of excellence.
In addition to the thousands of people that support non-profit organizations in town, residents and students are engaged in the workings of The City of Lake Forest. Along with hundreds of your neighbors serving on nearly 20 boards and commissions, volunteers are significant and valuable resources within the day-to-day operations of City departments. Lake Forest College students pair up with CROYA kids to work on community service projects, chaperoning dances and running other special events. Lake Forest College interns earn class credits while helping promote economic development, produce LFTV shows, run cameras and edit video productions.
Volunteers at Dickinson Hall assist with answering questions about Medicare and other insurance, income tax preparation for members, special event setup and service, provide door-to-door car rides for members in need of transportation, lead programs and help with clerical and reception duties at the Center. All volunteers receive special training and are certified when required.
High School students serve as student leaders at the Wildlife Discovery Center, helping provide tours, taking care of the animals, and assisting with programs and special events after school and on weekends. Other volunteers at the Wildlife Discovery Center help conduct studies on the animals and their habitats, outreach programs, traveling exhibits and serve as photographers.
