Director of Community Development

Community Development

My name is Catherine Czerniak (pronounced “Sir-knee-ack”). I am a City Planner and serve as the Director of Community Development for the City of Lake Forest. I joined the City of Lake Forest in 1997 as a Senior Planner and have served in the role of Director since 2002. Just prior to coming to Lake Forest I worked first as a neighborhood coordinator in the City Manager’s Office in the City of Eugene Oregon, and then as a city planner. My background also includes employment in the design field and work with various not for profit agencies. My undergraduate and graduate studies, which led me to a career in planning, included art, design, architecture, history, political science, urban and regional planning, environmental studies, management and public administration.

I am passionate about being a planner and am committed to processes that are open and inclusive.

I am fortunate to lead a department of experienced professionals who are committed to serving our customers; residents, business owners, design professionals, contractors, community institutions and others. The Community Development staff team places a priority on being an ally to our customers, not an obstacle, as we work in partnership to manage development and change in a manner that preserves community character, protects significant resources and honors long held traditions while at the same time, is open to new ideas, supports economic growth, protects property values and offers streamlined approval processes.

Speaking on behalf of the entire Community Development Department, we look forward to serving you.
