Local Sailor Tristan McDonald Sets Sail for US Sailing Olympic Trials
Lake Forest Sailing Member Tristan McDonald is gearing up for the challenge of a lifetime as he sets his sights on the US Sailing Olympic Trials in the ILCA 7 class.
At just 17 years old, McDonald will be the youngest competitor vying for a spot on the Olympic team, a testament to his exceptional talent and dedication to the sport.
“Tristan's journey to the Olympic Trials has been nothing short of remarkable,” said Lake Forest Sailing Supervisor and Head Coach Will Howard. “His impressive performances at National Regattas over the past year have earned him a well-deserved spot in this prestigious event.”
McDonald has been involved with Lake Forest Sailing for 8 years. A Lake Forest Parks and Recreation Program, Lake Forest Sailing offers instruction for all ages and skill levels and is nationally recognized and sanctioned as an accredited training center by US Sailing.
“I’m excited at the opportunity to represent Lake Forest Sailing and the Lake Forest community at the Olympic Trials,” said McDonald. “It’s an unbelievable opportunity, made possible in part by the support I’ve received over the years from Lake Forest Sailing and the unique training grounds of Lake Michigan.”
Not content with just one discipline, McDonald also showcased his versatility as a trimmer for the Lake Forest High School team, helping them secure a commendable second-place finish at the 2023 High School Keelboat National Championship. McDonald is one of the Lake Forest High School Sailing Team’s top skippers, maintaining their presence on the national stage.
The US Sailing Olympic Trials will take place in Miami from February 15-24, 2024 where Tristan will go head-to-head with the nation's top sailors for a chance to represent the United States on the Olympic stage.
